It is officially that time of year. The gyms are filled with people, ready for the year of their best body. Cookbooks featuring healthy, low calorie meals are selling everywhere. Perhaps relationships are being restored, big changes are being made, and people feel new again. That's what January is for it seems. A chance to renew ourselves.
The popular question about new year's resolutions is surfacing in conversations. I'll save you the trouble of asking and simply tell you mine....take longer showers. It truly is as simple as that. This is the year I love myself. This is the year I take of my body, mind, and spirit. It is not a year where I will be consumed in physical progress during my workouts, or stressing over reaching high goals I set New Year's Eve night.
I believe a Miss America is a confident woman with a secret. I think that the women who make it that far know something that the rest of us didn't know. But I am convinced I figured it out. They loved themselves through the process. They worked hard because it made them feel more confident. They ate healthy and worked out because it made them feel good. They served and loved others, while remembering to leave something for themselves. I believe the greatest Miss America's took long showers. I believe they figured out that the key to success was by taking care of the person reaching for it.
This can be and will be my year. This is the year that I grow as a person, and work for the title of Miss Kansas and Miss America harder than ever. But this is the year I take care of myself. This is the year I truly understand that my worth does not come from other's opinions or a crown. The woman others fear is a woman who is not scared of herself. There's a glow a Miss America has...it's because she took long showers. That's the secret.
